Rewires

Rewiring or rewires are necessary in older properties, have your electrical installation checked for peace of mind and for a full report (periodic inspection report) on its condition. Renovation and refurbishment frequently means that a house needs rewiring. The standards of wiring in the older houses simply don’t stand up to today’s rigorous safety standards. Rewiring an old house can also be a matter of convenience; as our reliance on electrical appliances has increased greatly. Sockets in older properties are often too few in number or they are badly located.

Rewires is also necessary in older houses. Loft or garage conversions and extensions need adequate and convenient power supply.

Does your House need to be rewired?

Our electricians can carry out a periodic electrical test and inspection on your property to determine its condition. Cables, switches, socket-outlets and other accessories deteriorate with use and misuse, and require regular checking. All houses should have their electrical systems checked at least every ten years. Commercial properties every 5 years or less in some cases.

There are several indicators that an experienced electrician will look for to determine the age of your electrical system and whether your property needs rewiring.

Spot the signs:

  • Cables coated in black rubber – black rubber was phased out in the 1960′s. Cables coated in lead or a fabric are even older. Modern cables use PVC insulation.
  • A fusebox with a wooden back, cast iron switches, a haphazard mixture of circuit boxes
  • Sockets and light switches discoloured, brown or black patches on them
  • Arcing – this is when you hear a crackling noise coming from a socket, switch, Light or any part of the electrical installation.
  • Flickering lights, this can be a sign that the insulation of the cables is breaking down, if so should be replaced.
  • Older round pin sockets and round light switches, braided flex hanging from ceiling roses to light fittings, black switches, sockets mounted in skirting boards
  • Wall mounted light switches in bathrooms
